What Distribution Actually Teaches You

One of the strangest parts of independent filmmaking is how little people discuss distribution while simultaneously building entire careers around the hope of eventually reaching it.

One of the strangest parts of independent filmmaking is how little people discuss distribution while simultaneously building entire careers around the hope of eventually reaching it.

Early on, I think a lot of filmmakers unconsciously imagine distribution as the finish line.

In reality, it's usually the beginning of a completely different education.

Distribution forces you to confront the difference between making a film and positioning a film.

Those are not the same skillset.

Over time, I became increasingly interested in:

  • —Audience behavior
  • —Metadata
  • —Packaging
  • —Key art
  • —Positioning
  • —Long-tail catalog value
  • —Platform ecosystems
  • —Discoverability

Because once a project is completed, the conversation changes entirely.

The question stops being: "Is the film finished?"

And becomes: "How does this survive inside an overcrowded media environment?"

That realization eventually expanded beyond traditional film distribution into broader media infrastructure thinking altogether.

  • —Archival media.
  • —Public domain packaging.
  • —Catalog systems.
  • —Long-tail monetization.
  • —Digital positioning.

A surprising amount of independent media is ultimately determined by operational clarity rather than creative ambition alone.

That doesn't mean creativity stops mattering.

It means the projects that survive usually understand how creativity interacts with systems.

One of the more valuable lessons distribution teaches you is humility.

You realize quickly that audiences are unpredictable. Platforms change constantly. Attention shifts overnight.

The work rarely behaves the way you imagined it would.

Which is probably why adaptability matters so much long term.
